In the spirit of the holidays, we’d like to motivate our job-seekers with some much-needed guidance during the excitement associated with this time of year. Believe it or not, many job-seekers will plan on taking these last few weeks of the year off and postpone their job search. Assuming employers are simply not interested in filling vacancies, for whatever reason.
Employers ARE Hiring.
So you’re probably telling yourself if a prospective employer is hiring during the holidays then it must be a “holiday job” or a seasonal position, right? Well, I’m here to tell you that this is simply not always the case. In fact, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s JOLTS report, more people are hired in the months of November and December than in January.
November 2013 – 4,529,000 hires
December 2013 – 4,578,000 hires
January 2014 – 4,535,000 hires
Let’s do the math! If you notice, January hires were only 6,000 more than November hires, and a whopping 40,000 less than December hires. With the hecticness of any company or organization during the holidays, it’s safe to say that the recruiting process for many January hires actually began in December or November. So again, do the math!
- Many employers want to be “ramped up” for the new year, with the staffing levels at 100%.
- In many organizations, budget dollars that aren’t used before the end of the fiscal year (often December 31) are not available for the new fiscal year. So they want to fill those jobs before the budgets evaporate.
Lastly, there is always work to be done, regardless of the time of year. In the U.S., many employers, retail especially, reach out to prospective employees during the holidays, but this process tends to begin in September and October. So waiting for the “new year” could leave you out in the cold, and just as unemployed as you were in the “old year.”
“The year-end holiday period is the calm before the storm that is the January job market,” according to one staffing expert.
